Introduction to Healing Gardens
Vessel Once again I'd like to thank you for allowing me to share some information about Healing Gardens with you at the June meeting. The subject is wide and varied and there are many approaches to what a healing garden is, however the purpose remains the same - a space devoted to nurturing the body, mind and spirit. Start with a plant or an object you love and create around it.

I have compiled a list of resources below that I hope will help to guide you and quench your thirst for more information (for now). I've also added several files for you to download on the website which include plans for a Fragrant Garden, A Moon Garden as well as the link to "The Lost Gardens of Heligan" and the Mud Lady Sculpture at the 4Head Healing Garden, winner of the 2006 Prestigious Chelsea Flower Show also the Native American Tipi Garden.

You are welcome to visit my blog or contact me via email.

I wrote this page in response to the request for more information after I gave a talk about Healing Gardens to the Master Gardeners of Kerr/Gillespie Counties in June 2012 and hopefully this short note will help avoid confusion for our other readers.

My introduction to Healing Gardens
A short talk about how the Healing Garden came about. Presented by Vessel.

The Healing Garden FBG

The Healing Garden in Fredericksburg was established in Fall 2010 as a personal healing journey and gift to this wonderful community. These pictures were taken in Spring 2013 and the newest addition to the garden are the English Roses. Please see the picture below of this stunning first bloom on David Austin's "Grace". Though the garden is not open to the general public we do allow for small groups by appointment only.

The Native American Tipi Garden

I designed this Native American garden while working at the Fredericksburg Herb Farm 2004-07 using the ancient Native American "Three Sisters Technique" of planting Corn, Squash and Beans in a hill. I also intermixed other Native American heirloom seeds around the hills. Some of the varieties used were:
  • Hopi Black Dye Sunflowers
  • Native American Green Corn
  • Hopi Red Dye Amaranth
  • Cherokee Purple Tomatoes
  • Blackfoot Daises
  • Hopi Orange Squash

The 4 Head Healing Garden: 2006 Winner - Chelsea Flower Show

The poem on the bridge in the photo below is "Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven" by William
Butler Yeates and is presented for your enjoyment beneath the 4 Head Healing Garden images.

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven: ~William Butler Yeates
